Program Manager (Contract)

Summary

The Wikimedia Foundation is a non-profit organization supporting Wikipedia and a suite of other wiki projects. We operate one of the world’s top ten websites and have global reach and impact. Innovation is critical to our mission to support every human in sharing knowledge. We are looking for a Program Manager, someone who will become a trusted partner for our distributed team, someone who is comfortable working and communicating in a highly collaborative, open environment, as well as someone who is passionate about making operational excellence a prominent part of our daily work and about connecting people. You’ll work remotely with a distributed community-facing team, and need to overlap working hours (UTC-7 to UTC+1). 

You are responsible for:

Increase team effectiveness 
using elements of common industry frameworks/methodologies (like Agile, Kanban…)
Manage sequencing of tasks, projects, and dependencies
Promote a culture of continuous improvement
Motivate individuals to follow through on team commitments
Ensure that team aligns its decisions with departmental and organizational goals
Facilitate weekly meetings and any team ceremonies
Plan and lead team off-sites
Develop and support healthy team dynamics
Promote a team culture that welcomes diverse perspectives
Support team leadership:
Streamline, organize, and support reporting and communication flow; provide briefings and representation when needed
Support administrative tasks
Manage team calendar
Other duties as assigned

Skills and Experience:

1-3 years experience in the field
Strong interpersonal communications skills
Knowledge of theoretical and practical aspects of project management
Strong prioritization, organization, planning, and time management skills
Experience with deciding when to pursue escalation
Experience with using project management software e.g. Asana, Phabricator
Natural inclination for team collaboration and for helping colleagues succeed
Flexible mindset and ability to adjust processes to scale or to change course
Fluent in spoken and written English, and at least one other language (Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese…), ideally more

Qualities that are important to us:

Ability to relate to distributed teams representing various cultures and featuring different communication and learning styles
A good listener whose people skills include servant leadership, empathy, diplomacy, and negotiation of needs
Ability to build relationships and trust, and enforce accountability

Additionally, we’d love it if you have:

Experience working in an international organization that has a distributed staff; ability to thrive in it and to nurture and maintain positive, respectful professional relationships
Experience working with volunteer communities, professionally or otherwise
